My Erasmus+ Adventure in Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg, Germany!

Erasmus+ Period: 19.02.2024 - 18.04.2024

"I want to share my impressions of the Erasmus internship that I had the opportunity to undertake, thanks to the entire team at the Erasmus+ Office at the Medical University - Sofia.

After a long process of preparing documents and complex communication with colleagues from Germany, everything paid off and was well worth it! Upon my arrival, I was warmly welcomed and immediately introduced to the work environment. The German medical school deserves admiration for its organization and discipline.

In the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, I had the unique chance to assist in surgeries that are performed in very few places in Europe. I observed patient interactions at the highest level with world-renowned specialists like Dr. Martin Husen during consultation days. An interesting coincidence during my time at this clinic was the protest by my colleagues for better working conditions. Afterward, I was congratulated by the head of the clinic for my diligence during the internship, at the morning briefing attended by around 100 doctors in the clinic.

In the Department of Cardiology, Angiology, and Pulmonology, I participated in resolving various and rare cases, as the clinic is one of the main treatment centers in Germany. Throughout the experience, I had the support of students and residents who helped me integrate. Special thanks go to future Dr. Aslı Mehmed from Ruse, who provided invaluable assistance.

After the internship, my colleagues were enthusiastic about my involvement with the university hospital teams. I received an offer to stay and work in the Department of Hematology and Oncology as a physician assistant while waiting for my diploma to be recognized.

During this time, I maintained contact with the Medical Association in Baden-Württemberg and decided to continue my development at a global level for the benefit of my future patients at Heidelberg University Hospital.

Huge thanks to the Erasmus+ team at MU-Sofia for opening the doors to global medicine for me!
