Erasmus+ Period: from April 28 to June 27
As someone raised in a small rural town in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, being awarded the Erasmus+ Mobility Scholarship by the Medical University of Sofia was a remarkable personal and academic milestone. This opportunity enabled me to deepen my understanding of public health while fully immersing myself in the rich cultural life of Bulgaria. The journey left an indelible mark on me, both professionally and personally.
Academic Growth and Learning
During my two-month placement, I carried out fieldwork for a cross-sectional study titled: "Dietary Habits and Health Behaviours Among Nurses in Sofia, Bulgaria," which applied the Social Ecological Model as its framework. The study highlights the crucial yet often underrepresented topic of nurses' health and lifestyle behaviours. This research focus complements my broader academic commitment to the well-being of healthcare workers, an area I am also investigating through my Master of Public Health degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. While the two studies are distinct, both emphasise the urgent need for environments and policies prioritising frontline healthcare professionals' health and nutrition.
I also had the privilege of participating in the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) on "Tackling Misinformation and Disinformation to Regain Trust in Public Health." This dynamic five-day seminar brought together students and professionals from Europe, South Africa, and the United States to engage in thought-provoking discussions on health communication ch allenges in today's digital age.
A particularly inspiring academic highlight was attending a lecture by Assoc. Prof. Hazan Dogan of Selçuk University, Turkey. This encounter opened the door to future collaborative research initiatives, particularly in the areas of food labelling, healthcare worker well-being, and public health education.
As part of the structured learning, I also toured key institutions, gaining practical insight into Bulgaria's healthcare and academic systems. One of the most impressive visits was to the Military Medical Academy in Sofia, where the fusion of education, innovation, and healthcare delivery was evident. Other institutions I engaged with included Tokuda Hospital, St. Ekaterina Hospital, the Faculty of Public Health, and the Medical University Library, offering valuable perspectives on clinical excellence and public health education.
Cultural Highlights and Immersive Experiences
Beyond academics, my Erasmus+ experience was deeply enriched by Bulgaria's cultural charm and hospitality. One unforgettable day involved visiting the countryside to take part in the traditional rose-picking season, a national treasure of Bulgaria. I learned how essential oils are extracted from the Damask roses, gaining hands-on experience in transforming petals into fragrant oils. It was both meditative and enlightening.
I also learned and participated in the Horo, a traditional Bulgarian group dance, where I joined hands with local participants and international peers. The rhythm, movement, and community spirit made it a memorable way to connect with local traditions.
A particularly magical moment was witnessing the Lunar Lights Festival at the National Palace of Culture. The city was illuminated with breathtaking light installations, transforming Sofia into a glowing canvas of art, colour, and wonder. It was a surreal experience, standing under a glowing moon, surrounded by locals and tourists alike, all brought together by creativity and community.
Another unforgettable evening took place at a world-renowned Bulgarian restaurant known for hosting global celebrities. That night featured a live fire-dancing show, and to my astonishment and joy, I was ceremoniously carried over the fire, a symbolic gesture of welcome and celebration. The entire moment felt surreal and truly unforgettable.
Building Global Bridges
Throughout my Erasmus+ journey, I had the chance to build friendships and professional connections with peers from Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Finland, Serbia, Japan, Sri Lanka, Argentina, the United States, and Italy. These interactions broadened my cultural horizons and laid the groundwork for collaborative research and lifelong partnerships.
Closing Reflections
Participating in the Erasmus+ Mobility Programme has been a truly transformative experience. It expanded my global perspective, deepened my knowledge of European public health systems, and reinforced my dedication to health equity and community well-being. This opportunity strengthened my academic foundation and opened doors for future research and international cooperation.
Gratitude and Acknowledgements
I am especially grateful to the Faculty of Public Health at the Medical University of Sofia. It was a privilege to work under the leadership of Professor Antoniya Yanakieva, Head of Faculty, whose mentorship and openness were invaluable. I also wish to extend heartfelt thanks to Assistant Professor Yoana Simeonova and the department staff for their guidance and collegiality throughout the research process. A special thank you to Mr. Georgi Gensuzov, whose kind facilitation and logistical support helped make the entire exchange experience seamless and productive.
