Erasmus+ Period: from March to May 2025
My Erasmus+ Mobility Experience in Sofia, Bulgaria, (from March to May 2025, Contract №: 2022-1-BG01-KA171-HED-000074631).
Taking part in the Erasmus+ internship program in Sofia was a truly transformative experience for me, both professionally and personally. As a midwifery student, I had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a completely new environment, and to deepen my knowledge and passion for maternal healthcare.
During my internship, I was involved in a variety of clinical activities. I observed several childbirths and even assisted in some of them under the supervision of experienced professionals. Being present at such powerful and emotional moments in a woman’s life was incredibly meaningful and helped me understand the importance of both medical expertise and emotional support during labor and delivery.
I also had the chance to assist in the administration of medication and follow different protocols related to pregnancy and postpartum care. Furthermore, I observed and participated in various surgical procedures, which gave me a broader perspective on how interdisciplinary teams work together in critical situations. These experiences helped me improve my practical skills, build confidence, and learn to stay calm and focused even in high-pressure scenarios.
What surprised me the most was how quickly I adapted to working in a new healthcare system, in a different country, and with people from various cultural backgrounds. I was initially nervous about the language barrier, but I found that communication in healthcare goes far beyond words. The staff at the hospital were very welcoming and supportive, which made me feel comfortable and encouraged me to take initiative.
Living in Sofia was also a wonderful part of the experience. I got to explore the city’s rich history, vibrant culture, and beautiful landmarks such as the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Vitosha Mountain, and the National Palace of Culture. Bulgarian cuisine and hospitality made me feel at home, and I even managed to pick up a few basic words in Bulgarian!
This mobility experience has had a deep impact on me. It has made me more independent, adaptable, and open-minded. It also reinforced my commitment to becoming a compassionate and skilled midwife, capable of working in diverse settings. I am truly grateful for the opportunity, and I believe every student should experience something like this at least once in their academic journey.
