Erasmus+ Period: 17.03.2025 – 16.05.2025
Taking part in the Erasmus+ internship program in Sofia, Bulgaria has been an incredibly valuable experience, both professionally and personally. As a Public Health student, I had the chance to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world setting while learning new skills, meeting new people, and exploring a different culture.
Internship activities
During my internship in the field of Public Health, I was actively involved in tasks that allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting. My main focus was on the development and implementation of health-related research tools and educational materials. Some of my key responsibilities included:
Designing and structuring public health questionnaires aimed at collecting data on health behaviors and perceptions
Analyzing data and creating visual representations (graphs and charts) to communicate key findings
Contributing to the planning of a small-scale health intervention, including the development of informational content for the target population
Conducting basic statistical evaluations to assess trends and results
Collaborating with supervisors and peers to improve the clarity and relevance of our research materials
This hands-on experience strengthened my understanding of public health research methodology and gave me insight into how public health initiatives are prepared and presented in a real-world context.
Skills gained
This experience helped me develop and strengthen a wide range of skills:
Professional skills: improved data analysis, presentation design, and research writing
Soft skills: better time management, adaptability, and cross-cultural communication
Language and communication: while English was the main language used, being in a Bulgarian-speaking environment improved my ability to communicate with people from different backgrounds
Life in Sofia
Living in Sofia was one of the most memorable parts of my Erasmus experience. I stayed in the lively area of Studentski Grad, which is full of energy, students, and convenient places to socialize or study. The city itself is a beautiful mix of history and modern life. I enjoyed exploring local markets, trying traditional Bulgarian dishes, and walking through green spaces like Borisova Gradina and South Park. I visited iconic landmarks such as the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Vitosha Boulevard, and I also had the chance to go hiking in Vitosha Mountain, which offers breathtaking views of the city. Sofia felt welcoming and safe, and adapting to life there became easier each day. The combination of cultural exploration and everyday student life made my stay enriching and exciting.
Reflections
This internship helped me see the practical side of Public Health and confirmed my interest in continuing my studies—possibly pursuing a Master’s in Public Health abroad. It also gave me the confidence to live independently in a new country, build international connections, and embrace new experiences.
I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity and would highly recommend it to any student who wants to challenge themselves, grow, and explore new cultures.
